Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and, in response to these obsessions, repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that individuals feel compelled to perform to alleviate anxiety. Obsessions can include fears of germs, harming others or themselves, a strong need for order or symmetry, and disturbing thoughts involving violence or sex. Compulsions can include excessive washing or cleaning, double and triple checking hazards, repeating words in their mind, arranging objects in a specific manner, counting practices or rituals, and thinking counter or neutralizing thoughts to give less power to obsessive thoughts.

OCD can interfere with daily life, including work and relationships, but it is treatable through medication and reframing thoughts in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
