Therapy can help you resolve emotional and mental issues. There are different types of therapy that address different needs:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Our thoughts contribute to feelings and behaviors. When we change our thoughts, we have the potential to change our feelings and behaviors. Therapists use a tool called reframing to help us look at situations differently to help us better cope.

Especially useful for: depression, anxiety, trauma

Exposure therapy is a type of CBT used to help clients address fear and anxiety by increasing exposure to triggers in controlled environments.

Especially useful for: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
DBT focuses on emotional regulation, mindfulness, and acceptance of thoughts and feelings. Therapists using DBT focus on balancing changing thoughts and feelings and accepting them. They teach coping skills to regulate emotions.

Especially useful for: depression, borderline personality disorder, mood, impulsivity

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR)
EMDR involves processing traumatic experiences while performing eye movements. The goal is to desensitize the client to the traumatic experience by replacing reactions on pain with less emotionally charged reactions.

Useful for: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)
IPT focuses on relationships and interactions in them to pull out negative patterns. With an awareness of negative patterns, clients can work with their therapists to make interactions more positive.

Especially useful for: depression

Psychodynamic therapy
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on early attachments with caregivers to help explain current behaviors. Our style of attachment to caregivers in childhood can set a baseline for how we trust and depend on others.

Especially useful for: depression

Therapists also use other therapies, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to accept thoughts and feelings and reframe values and narrative therapy that challenges way clients view their experiences and themselves.
With a combination of therapies, therapists can help you overcome mental and emotional challenges.
