June is PTSD Awareness Month, and an opportunity to increase understanding of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. While it is often associated with military service, it also impacts civilians who have experienced accidents, violence, abuse, natural disasters, medical emergencies, or other overwhelming events. PTSD is a legitimate mental health condition, not a sign of weakness or personal failure.
PTSD can affect a person’s thoughts, emotions, relationships, and daily functioning. Common symptoms include intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance of trauma reminders, heightened anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and changes in mood. These symptoms may appear soon after a traumatic event or develop months or years later.
A key message of PTSD Awareness Month is that recovery is possible. Effective, evidence-based treatments can help individuals process traumatic experiences, reduce symptoms, and regain a sense of stability and control. Many people experience meaningful improvement with appropriate support.
Unfortunately, stigma can prevent people from seeking help. Concerns about judgment or appearing vulnerable often lead individuals to struggle in silence. Greater awareness helps reduce these barriers and encourages more open conversations about mental health.
If you recognize symptoms of PTSD in yourself or someone you care about, consider reaching out to a licensed mental health professional. Support is available, and treatment can make a significant difference. Labyrinth Psychological Services offers multiple evidence-based treatments for PTSD and is here to support members of our community.
This month, take time to learn about PTSD, support those affected by trauma, and help foster understanding. Awareness is an important step toward recovery, resilience, and hope.
