Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an emotional regulation disorder marked by intense emotions, mood instability, and impulsivity that can include harmful behaviors. BPD can result in challenges with self-image, confidence, fear of abandonment, and relationships. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can help people with BPD learn emotion management and coping skills, and medication can help with symptoms.
People with BPD may feel supported when others proactively learn about BPD to understand their symptoms, have patience, encourage them to seek treatment including therapy, actively listen with a focus on emotions and validating their feelings, set boundaries, accept them even if behaviors are rejected, and encourage them to seek help in a crisis by calling or texting 988.
With support, a loved one with BPD can better manage their symptoms.
