Childhood trauma and the chronic stress associated with it can affect our brain chemistry and coping mechanisms, which can cause chronic physical health problems. Childhood trauma and chronic stress can result in such physical health problems as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and autoimmune diseases. They can also lead to such unhealthy coping mechanisms as substance use, unhealthy eating habits, and risky sexual activities.
Exploring past traumas with a therapist can reduce chronic stress associated with those traumas. With a therapist, you can reframe limited beliefs from trauma, learn healthy coping skills, and process emotions in a safe space. Over time, a reduction in stress can reduce physical health problems.
