Are you or one of your family members a police officer, firefighter, emergency medical services provider, nurse, doctor, corrections officer or other first responder?

We know that first responders are well-trained, resilient, and selfless in their commitment to serve their communities.  We also know that first responders are uniquely susceptible to work-related stress due to the pressure and intensity of their jobs.

As a first responder, you may be regularly exposed to critical incidents such as life-threatening situations, injuries, and deaths which can affect your mental and physical health.  You may face the stress of working irregular hours, lack of management support, and a work-culture that encourages you to push your own needs aside to focus on the welfare of others and the task at hand.

At Labyrinth, we offer first responders simple strategies and solutions to buffer them from job stress and decrease the risk of common problems like PTSD, substance abuse, relationship conflict, and serious health conditions.  We are down to earth and we understand the realities of your job.  Many of us have grown up in military or first responder families, worked as a first responder, or served in the military.

Most importantly, we care about you because we know you are putting other people first and making personal sacrifices everyday.  Who is looking out for your wellbeing?  Just like you may go to a trained mechanic for your routine and emergency car maintenance, we believe there are clear benefits to talking to a mental health specialist for the maintenance many first responders need to remain healthy over the course of an unusually demanding career.

Research has consistently shown that therapy can have a positive impact on the mental and physical well-being of first responders. Therapy can help you learn to reframe negative thoughts, build healthier coping skills, become more resilient, improve your relationships  and decrease the impact of stress on your overall physical health.  Participating in mental health treatment has also been shown to improve job performance because it helps first responders to maintain clear thinking and emotional balance during high-pressure situations.

Our therapists are also trained in more specialized treatments like EMDR, CBT and Substance Abuse Treatment for first responders who are experiencing depression, PTSD, burnout, suicidal thinking, or problems related to substance use.  In many cases, first responders who have the courage to tackle these problems in a confidential and supportive therapy relationship can recover and remain on the job.
