Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that strength and struggle can coexist. Many men are taught from an early age to push through pain, handle problems on their own, and avoid showing vulnerability. While resilience is valuable, constantly carrying stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or grief without support can take a significant toll. Unfortunately, many men wait until they are in crisis before reaching out for help, often believing they should be able to manage everything themselves.

In my work with veterans, first responders, and men from all walks of life, I have seen firsthand that seeking help is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of courage. Whether someone is struggling with the effects of trauma, relationship difficulties, work-related stress, or simply feeling overwhelmed by the demands of life, talking to someone can make a meaningful difference. Mental health challenges often show up differently in men, sometimes appearing as irritability, anger, isolation, substance use, or emotional withdrawal rather than sadness alone.

This month, I encourage men to take an honest look at how they are doing. Check in with yourself the same way you would check in with a friend or family member. If you have been carrying something heavy, know that you do not have to carry it alone. Reaching out for support, whether through therapy, trusted relationships, or your community, is one of the strongest steps you can take toward improving your mental health and overall well-being.
