For active-duty military and first responders, situational awareness is critical for performance, but also for safety. Hypervigilance, however, is a common response to chronic stress and repeated trauma. While they can feel similar, they are fundamentally different. Understanding that difference can improve both effectiveness and well-being.
A useful framework is Cooper’s Color Codes, developed by Jeff Cooper in the 1970s. This model describes levels of awareness:
- Condition White: Unaware and unprepared
- Condition Yellow: Calm, alert, and ready—this is the goal
- Condition Red: Action mode when a threat is identified
- Condition Black: Overwhelmed, with impaired thinking and response
Situational awareness lives in Condition Yellow. In this state, individuals stay calm, take in information clearly, and respond appropriately without becoming overwhelmed.
Hypervigilance, by contrast, pulls people into Condition Red or even Black—often without a real, immediate threat. Staying in these heightened states too long leads to fatigue, reduced performance, and burnout.
The good news is that hypervigilance is manageable. Stress regulation skills and trauma-focused therapies, such as EMDR or Prolonged Exposure, can help individuals return to Condition Yellow. The goal isn’t to lose your edge—it’s to control it, so it’s there when you need it, not running the show when you don’t.
