Bipolar disorder is marked by extreme mood swings that range from mania to depression. Manic episodes can include happiness and excitement, an inflated sense of self-worth, rapid thoughts, difficulty focusing, less need for sleep, and increased risk-taking. Depressive episodes can include sadness, indifference, hopelessness, low activity, and thoughts of suicide. Treatment can include medication and therapy to manage symptoms.

You can support someone with bipolar disorder by actively listening to understand, showing empathy, and being patient with finding effective medication. Routine and helping them with tasks can help them reduce stress. Self-care, including adequate sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise, can help you support your loved one consistently.

Manic episodes may warrant specific support including making time for the person with bipolar disorder, maintaining a calm environment, helping them with staying fed and hydrated, and encouraging sleep.
