Before talking with your kids about mental health, keep an eye out for warning signs of potential struggles such as irritability, withdrawal, panic attacks, self-harm, aggression, appetite or sleep changes, vomiting, chronic worry, disruptive behavior, mood swings, substance use, and/or lower grades. Symptoms may increase with a move, bullying, parents’ divorce, or the death of a loved one. Seek help from your child’s doctor regarding evaluation, medication, and treatment plans.

Ask your child how they’re feeling and how you can help in a safe space. Validate and reflect back what they say. Take the discussion at the pace your child wants to take it. If it’s appropriate, check to see if they’ve thought of or have plans on harming themselves or others.
