Being adopted or adopting a child can be a truly wonderful experience. This can create a strong sense of unity for a family that is starting or for a family who is looking to expand. It can also provide the adopted child with a sense of belonging or acceptance. Despite the warm feelings that may come with adoption, it can also prompt new thoughts or feelings such as “why am I adopted”, or “why was I rejected”.  For the adopting parents questions such as “when should I inform them they are adopted”, or “will they accept me as their new family” may arise. These are common barriers folks who adopt or who have been adopted may face. Adoption inherently comes with many questions for adopted children and it’s important to understand that adoption taps into many emotions which can be just as equally positive as they can be negative. The key to both parties feeling safe and valued is by finding the balance between managing these emotions and coming to an acceptance of what was and what may be in the future.   While there is the opportunity for growth and connection, it can sometimes be impeded by perception, guilt, or rejection. Trying to make sense of these intense feelings and emotions can be challenging and if you or a loved one are experiencing these difficulties, it is important to speak with caring professionals.

If you feel that you may be experiencing family or personals barriers, Labyrinth Psychological Services offers services in person and through telehealth which can help you process these thoughts in order to overcome professional or personal barriers.
